I am looking for a few great tips for interviewing!

I recently had interviewed at a company in the area and thought it went well. Much to my suprise, I did not receive the job. I had only had one interview in my 18 years of work prior to these first and second interviews but I do not know where I went wrong.

I am looking for a few sure fire ideas that I can use to help improve my chances during my upcoming interviews. I have books and pamplets, but I am looking for ideas from people that have gone through this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing to keep in mind is this.  The only difference between interviewing and selling is the product.  In your case, the product is you.  Consider your "promotional materials" - i.e. resume, cover letter.   Sure they're informative...but are they interesting and engaging?  Do they speak with your voice?  And do they relate your experience to the position you're seeking?  Next, consider your personal presentation. Does your voice match that of your resume?  Are you confident, clear, and comfortable? Are you engaging the interviewer, connecting with him/her in a way that makes them comfortable with you, confident in your skills, and eager to know more?

The best sales pitches don't tell people to buy things.  They explain why people want to buy things.  The same goes for an interview.  Take a look at your message, and your messaging, and determine if it says what it should, the way it should.  If it doesn't, give me a call.  After all, I'm a Wordsmith - shaping words into works of art.

Good luck!

RJ-I  really enjoyed being part of your presence at Wimi (Best Western 1/11/12). You shared so many fantastic, very practical tips for conveying a message. As a newbie to the business world (RN by trade-entering entrepreneurial nonprofit land), I lack the experience and savvy many  accomplished entrepreneurs toss around so easily. AND doubly challenged with ADHD, plus highly active creative mind, I struggle with concisity (OK I made that one up) and clarity. Anyhow, just wish I had the skills you do! Thanks so much for sharing your vast  wealth of insight!~

Thanks RJ for the advice. I understand what you are saying and try hard to sell myself. I do not have a problem keeping the interviewers interested with my skills and experiences, I am just not the type to "brag" myself up and take it to the next level. I need to somehow get over the hump at those points of the interviews. I have a few interviews under my belt now and I am no longer desperate for work. That should help.
